Calculate growing season from spring planting, fall harvest or either: Whether the heat unit
requirements for this plant should be calculated from its spring planting date or from its fall harvest date.
Choosing 'spring or fall' will use whichever end of the growing season is closest when you plant the seed.
Planting date as days after first spring frost (can be negative): If this plant is planted in spring,
this is the number of days after (or before if negative) the last spring frost when this plant is normally
planted in a cold climate. If this plant is planted in summer, use the days before first fall frost instead.
Maturity date as days before first fall frost (can be negative): If this plant is harvested in fall, this
is the number of days before (or after if negative) the first fall frost when the plant is usually harvested in
a cold climate. If this plant is harvested in summer, use planting days after the last spring frost.
Days from planting date to grow plant optimally (as if in a greenhouse): When a seed of this
type is planted, the plant will grow optimally for this number of days instantly and before you even see
it. Seedlings grown this way will be ready to plant as if you were growing them in a greenhouse from
seed.
Days from planting to germination: Days it normally takes
after planting until germination is complete. Used (with climate and planting/harvest dates) to calculate
heat units required for germination.
Days from emergence to season maturity: Days it normally
takes after emergence (the end of germination) until this plant is considered fully grown. For a biennial or
perennial, days in one normal growth season. Used (with climate and
planting/harvest dates) to calculate heat units at maturity.
Minimum heat units required for germination if climate is cold: This parameter puts a lower bound on the number of heat units required for
germination, no matter how cold the climate.
Maximum heat units required for germination if climate is hot: This parameter puts an upper
bound on the number of heat units required for germination, no matter how hot the climate.
Minimum heat units at maturity if climate is cold: This parameter puts an lower bound on the
number of heat units required for maturity, no matter how cold the climate.
Maximum heat units at maturity if climate is hot: This parameter puts an upper bound on the
number of heat units required for maturity, no matter how hot the climate.
Heat units required for germination: Number of heat units required before germination is
complete. Calculated from planting/harvest dates relative to frost (in cold climates) or January 1 (in hot
climates) and from days planting-maturity. Bounded by min and max heat units for germination.
Potential heat units at maturity: Number of heat
units required before plant is mature. Calculated from planting/harvest dates relative to frost (in cold
climates) or January 1 (in hot climates) and from days planting-maturity. Bounded by min and max heat
units for maturity.
Growth minimum temperature: The lowest temperature at which this plant will grow. This
temperature is used as a base to calculate the number of heat units expected in a typical growing season.
