Garden with Insight v1.0 Help: growth rate


The growth rate of a plant is generally defined as the increase over time in the total dry weight of the plant, usually per day. This is the same as the net photosynthate (new plant material) plus minerals taken from the soil per day. (This is also called absolute growth rate; relative growth rate is the absolute growth rate divided by the total plant weight at the start of the growth interval (the day).)

In this simulation we follow total plant biomass more than growth rate, though of course one can graph new biomass as the growth rate. We also do not consider mineral uptake in new growth because absorbed minerals tend to make up only about 5% of total plant biomass.
